- Awarded distinguished "Grand Award" from American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for British Petroleum project in Casper, Wyoming

- Awarded Earth Day RUSDA project for Minnesota, City of Rutledge
- Formed strategic technology license alliance with Dharma Living Systems, patent holder of Living MachineTM . In addition, David Austin, leading designer of Dharma's Living MachineTM, joined the NAWE engineering team
- Formed collaborative marketing agreement with Ecological Engineering Group, license holder of Wastewater or Washwater GardensTM, SOLTRAN and composting technology
- Formed a teaming arrangement with Jacques Whitford, a geotechnical engineering firm in Canada, providing NAWE's constructed wetland expertise to their clients
- Formed a teaming arrangement with Weaver Boos, engineering firm in Illinois, providing NAWE's constructed wetland expertise in the landfill leachate market
- Hosted a delegation from Shenyang, China interested in NAWE's cold climate construction wetland technology

- Boy Scouts of America: NAWE Completes engineering evaluation of 10 Mile River camps in New York
- All technical staff become OSHA HAZWOPER trained in order to be able to work on hazardous waste sites

- Designed 3 of the largest sand filters in Minnesota for the Forest Lake School District

1997 Highlights
- Rahr Malting wins the 1997 Minnesota Environmental Initiative Award for the point/nonpoint source trading permit negotiated by NAWE principals. NAWE restores 180 acres of row-cropped floodplain back into native vegetation as part of the trading permit
- First patent filings for Forced Bed Aeration™ process
- First permit for a wetland treatment system issued by the State of Minnesota
