Wastewater treatment is an unavoidable necessity. As communities strive to attract new businesses and provide valuable services to their residents, wastewater and water infrastructure is key in helping them grow and remain vibrant. JW NAWE helps small communities plan comprehensive and affordable wastewater infrastructure, which results in positive outcomes for small communities, such as increased property values, a stronger economy, cleaner water and an healthier environment.
JW NAWE is experienced providing wastewater services to small communities and helping them find funding for their new wastewater system. We provide our municipal clients with affordable engineering designs, quality construction services, and knowledgeable system operation and maintenance (O&M). JW NAWE understands the process small communities need to follow to communicate, plan and finance this infrastructure. We provide services from the beginning of the process all the way through to when the system in up and operating. Services that we provide to our municipal clients include:

Preliminary Engineering Reports (PER). JW NAWE can provide Preliminary Engineering Reports for small and/or unsewered communities. The purpose of the PER is to investigate wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal options for a community, and to recommended wastewater solution.

Financial Planning. JW NAWE financial specialists provide grant, loan, bonding, and financial administration services to help small communities locate and secure funding for their new or replacement wastewater treatment system.

Design Services. We provide engineering design services for a wide array of wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal technologies; our system designs are tailor-fit to meet the unique needs of each individual community.

Construction Observation Services. The JW NAWE construction observation team ensures that our engineering designs are constructed with confidence and attention to detail. Our routine quality inspections are an integral part of every construction job.

Operation and Maintenance (O&M). System operation and maintenance by a qualified professional service provider is required for any size wastewater treatment system. NAWE created an operations and maintenance company (EcoCheck, Inc.) to meet the O&M needs of all decentralized wastewater treatment systems. EcoCheck provides O&M services for over 80 wastewater facilities in and around the Midwest.
JW NAWE is a leader in decentralized wastewater management and has helped a number of communities with their wastewater needs.
City of Greenville, Iowa
JW NAWE designed a horizontal flow constructed wetland system with for the City of Greenville, a community of 43 homes and 2 businesses, located in Clay County Iowa. The horizontal flow constructed wetland treatment system provides a natural method of treating the wastewater prior to disposal to the receiving stream. The wetland plants that are utilized in the treatment system provide an aesthetically pleasing amenity to the City of Greenville, while providing a significant environmental benefit to the local area.
City of Spring Hill, Minnesota
Jacques Whitford NAWE, Inc. designed a subsurface flow constructed wetland with Forced Bed Aeration™ for the City of Spring Hill, a community of 46 homes, located in central Stearns County, Minnesota. The City was being served by individual septic systems, the majority of which did not meet code requirements. Spring Hill needed to install wastewater services for its community in conjunction with a highway improvement project. Jacques Whitford NAWE, Inc. received the 1999 Minnesota Engineering Project of the Year Award from USDA Rural Development for its role in the innovative Spring Hill system.
Comprehensive Services
The operation and maintenance of community wastewater systems is a hot issue amongst regulators, land developers, and design professionals. There is a growing need for local government, developers and communities to understand the management, operation, and maintenance needs of decentralized wastewater treatment systems.
What does mean to manage, operate, and maintain a wastewater treatment system? Wastewater treatment systems require regular operational checks by a qualified professional who can also help plan for future maintenance of the treatment system. All wastewater treatment systems require routine monitoring, operational adjustments, replacement of worn parts, and fiscal management. Without proper operations and maintenance (O&M), any wastewater system - big or small - will prematurely fail and result in environmental degradation and potential human health risks.
Through our partnership with EcoCheck, Inc., JW NAWE has expanded its services to include O&M services for public and private wastewater and water systems. Creating continuity between engineering design, construction, and system operation makes for robust, high-quality systems that last. We are continually improving our engineering designs through the feedback gained from our construction crews and system operators.
